Over the course of years, we’ve made a few mistakes. One of those we regret the most was to not produce a workshop with paper sculptor Leo Monohan. We shot a few scenes but they were definitely not up to Leo’s high standards. Consequently they were never produced.
But it was an honor and a pleasure to get to know Leo. We are thrilled to share this interview so that you too get to know this exceptional artist.
With an exacto knife and a piece of paper, he could create a universe all his own. Hard work and a few lucky breaks helped Leo leave his Black Hills home and start a path that eventually led to art school, teaching at Chinard Institute and owning an ad agency in Los Angeles. His can-do attitude is contagious. To Leo, art is all about problem solving.
We hope you enjoy this interview with Leo Monohan.

In Watercolor from Within, Barbara Nechis works outward from a single spot of permanent magenta using memory, emotion, and the flowing paint on her paper to guide an inspired floral design. You’ll learn to make principled design decisions confidently and quickly as you develop a loose, direct painting into an intricate, layered composition. Barbara paints intuitively, responding to to what happens on the paper. Her composition reflects her feelings about her subject instead of literally representing the flowers.
Barbara emphasizes balance between repetition and variety. She corrals transparent color with opaque pigments and contrasts hard-edged elements with wet-into-wet petals. She avoids mixing on her palette but encourages blending by double-loading wide, square brushes and tilting her paper to make pigment flow.
Donna Zagotta (“The You Factor: Powerful, Personal Design in Opaque Watercolor”) has a feature article in the October issue of Watercolor Artist magazine on newsstands now. 1. Stay connected to the fact that art is an act of intention.
2. Find your ideal time of day to create and work with it.
3. Use an agenda book and a daily planner.
4. Use deadlines to your advantage.
5. Always have something “percolating” – something to look forward to each day that will entice you into the studio.
