Plein air tip…
I had my first Plein air paint out in a long time this week and it was a wonderful experience. I’d forgotten how important it is to be part of a community of artists. I don’t think that can be overstated as it is both inspiring and reassuring. In addition, painting in Plein air is definitely an acquired skill. I was visited by a sense of urgency, to get it all down, that I had to combat in order to focus on the scene at hand.
I picked up a trick… it could possibly be considered cheating, but here it goes. Because the ever-changing direction of light dramatically changes a scene, I took a digital picture of my view as soon as I decided on my painting location. When morning turned to afternoon, and the sun had totally shifted (altering my design) I simply reviewed the image held on the view screen of my camera to refresh my memory. Because the camera review screen is so small, it simplified my dark and light pattern making a stronger painting design in the end. This was a good thing because I need all the help I can get!
Another tip: bring bug repellent and don’t wear perfume or perfumed hair spray… it attracts more bees.
I encourage joining an outdoor painting group, it makes summer even better!
